Is it possible for a dog to grieve herself to death? My parents had their
little daschund die at age 10. There was another cocker spaniel that was
always with him. She died 11 days later after he died. I'm wondering if
it's foul play, or if a dog can really grieve itself to death. Can anyone
tell me if this can happen?

the only way to really know is to have necropsied done if you are in
doubt why a pet died. Although you might not feel like putting yourself
through that at the time, it's very likely to give you peace of mind
later. Had a necropsy been done, you wouldn't be asking these questions
now.

I do feel that the stress of losing a companion can aggravate underlying
conditions that could push the other companion over the edge.

Without a necropsy, there is nothing left to do except speculate.

I had a friend whose husband had leukemia. He was bedbound for about 3 mos.
teh dog was always beside the man. After he died, the dog just mopped
around, wouldn't eat, and several weeks later my friend found Bubbles dead.
I really think they grieve.

Many years ago my mom had a canary. He loved my mom as she was home all day
and he sang all the time. One Easter when I was a little girl my parents
bought me colored chicks (remember those dyed chicks?)The day they came into
the house and were placed in our sunroom, Chipper the canary went to the
bottom of his cage, never sang or got on his perch again. My mom found him
dead in 2 weeks. Some people find that hard to believe but it happened. My
mother never let me forget it!!!

It would be easy for me to believe that the cocker spaniel died from grief
if there wasn't a cat that was poisoned 2 doors down from my parent's house.
You see my parents have a neighbor who lived with her father. After her
father died, the first thing she did was have his dog put to sleep. For no
reason. She has admitted that she hates animals. It would be so easy for
her to have thrown something over the fence since she is right next door.
And the cat that was on the other side of her, died right after the
daschund, and a necropsy proved antifreeze poisoning. My parents are older,
and too trusting, therefore there is no way they would accuse her, or even
have a necropsy done to see what really happened. I just have a real bad
feeling about all of this. She put down a beautiful labrador without
reason. This was her father's pride and joy. She's a very hateful person
anyway. She brags when she speaks of her hatred for all animal life. I
guess I will never know the real truth, by in my heart I do.

A very sad story for all of us who care about life. I am so sorry, as I love
all beings!!

That's awful...wonder what she told the vet that euthanized him? Most vets
around here will refuse to euthanize an animal without a reason.

She lied and told the vet he had bitten someone. This was one of the most
gentle of dogs. My 2 year old would go to the fence and pet him. She just
wanted him gone. And my mom says that when they found the cocker spaniel
dead, she looked all dried up but wasn't smelling yet. So I suspect rat
poison. I know it dries the mice up. I know she did this to these dogs,
but can't prove it. Everyone in the neighborhood can't stand her, because
she's openly rude to people. People like her have no conscience.
Conscience is the presence of G-d in a person, that is what I've always
heard.

I totally agree. That cocker spaniel died a horrible death. She was just
totally dried up. She had went under a storage house, and nobody could get
her out. We don't know how long she lingered under there dying, because we
didn't think anything was wrong with her. She just disappeared and we
couldn't find her. My parents had to hire someone to find her and get her
out. Maybe if it's true about Karma, she will come to a bad end like that
poor dog. Thanks for your reply.
